At Bilingual Birdies, our mission is to encourage cross-cultural awareness through our foreign language and live music curriculum. We teach Spanish, French, Mandarin, Hebrew and English (ESL) through live music, movement, dance, puppetry, and theatre-based games. Our curriculum aims to teach ten to fifteen basic vocabulary words and short phrases in each class. We believe there is great value in educating young children on other cultures and languages through social and emotional play. In our classes children have the opportunity to develop a deeper sense of curiosity and compassion for others.
HERE ARE A FEW FAQS:
#1 ARE THE CLASSES FULL IMMERSION?
In a typical Bilingual Birdies class the majority of the lesson will be led in the foreign language. In order to eliminate any frustration, we do translate instructions when necessary. However, all of the songs and games are fully in the foreign language. For private classes and school partnerships we tailor the curriculum to meet your needs and if full immersion is a must for your children, we are happy to accommodate.
#2 HOW AGE APPROPRIATE ARE THE CLASSES?
Mixed Ages Classes –
Some moms have an 18 month old and a 3 year old and we want to make things easy for them! Our teachers are trained to engage a variety of ages at the same time. If you enroll in a mixed ages class it won’t be a problem for the children to all learn together. It can be a very empowering experience for a preschooler to pass instruments to a toddler in class. It is also helpful for toddlers to witness positive behavior of preschoolers. Plus, the mixed ages classes end up turning into one big educational family jam!
Classes for Infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers and Beyond –
We are very mindful of this when constructing the lessons as we are aware children learn differently as they grow. In the caregiver-and-child classes for infants and toddlers the curriculum is a lot more sensory based and focused on sounds, intonations, and the feeling. We use props like scarves, bubbles, and other soft play manipulatives which encourage gross motor skills. For the preschoolers we offer more movement activities and call-and-response. All classes in clude a high musicality value and are super interactive.
#3 HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR MY CHILD TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE?
We aim to introduce a love for foreign language and culture. Just like learning anything new in the early childhood years it takes about eight weeks for something to stick. Our classes are all structured the same while the themes change each week. This repetition makes it helpful for children to learn our engaging routine and feel they can rely on what comes next. With time children build trust and feel comfortable to participate even more. We encourage parents and teachers to play our CD for the children throughout the week to continue the process outside of our classes.
